My Story
My name is a Courtney Rice. I am firefighter on the west side of Indianapolis near the airport. I have been doing that job for over 20 years. I served as a volunteer firefighter for 12 years before that. Because of my deep involvement in the fire service and through the tradition of the fire service as well as a family heritage rooted in Scotland, I decided to learn to play the bagpipes. That was over 25 years ago.
My love for the pipes continued to grow the older I got. I have served as the Pipe Major of the Indianapolis Public Safety Pipes and Drums for almost 15 years. I also serve as the senior Pipe Major for the Fire Department Instructor’s Conference Pipe Band, one of the largest massed pipe bands in the country.
As you could imagine, there aren’t that may bagpipe players in the state and I soon started teaching. I have successfully taught a large portion of my current band. I also teach at large scale workshops for the fire service.
